The Peacock Houseboats established in 1972 by Mr Basher Ahmad are moored on the top site of Nagin, one of the most beautiful and peaceful of all the lakes.Made of fragrant cedar and well furnished with antique wooden furniture , the ornately carved houseboats reflect a time gone-by reminiscent of the days of the British Raj.

The New Peacock has a spacious carpeted sitting room, dining room, and bedrooms with western bathrooms attached. A cushioned verandah looks out over the lake – the houseboy will serve tea as the sun sets over the mountains peaks and skikaras paddle slowly by, offering fresh fruit, flowers and handicrafts for sale. And expansive sun deck on top of the houseboat is perfect for sitting in the warm sunshine. Western breakfast and choice of authentic Kashmiri or Western lunches and dinners are served by the houseboy.

Explore Ladakh
The 434 km drive from Srinagar to Leh takes 2 days and the flight about 40 minutes. The road journey is preferable for many reasons. The drive passes through an extraordinary range of scenery and crosses three major passes: Zoji La at 3529 meters, Namika La 3718 meters and Fatu La at 4092 meters. The landscape changes from the fertile green valleys and forest hillsides of Kashmir to the bare hillsides of Central Asia . The two days drive also allows the body to acclimatize to the change of altitude. The road climbs over Zoji La pass, 110 km from Srinagar . The first is the village Drass (one of the coldest inhabited places in the world in winter). The road then drops slightly to the district of Kargil at 2650 meters.
